"Even though nostalgia hits every generation, it seems awfully early for 28-year-olds to be looking back. One possible explanation, say authors who focus on generational identity, is the impact of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The political and economic climate of the late ’90s had been as soothing as a Backstreet Boys ballad: no wars, unemployment as low as 4 percent, a $120 billion federal surplus."

"Mr. Taylor, who was a sophomore in high school on that day, sees the appeal of the Blink-182 reunion tour (“part of Blink’s allure was their carefree nature”), and he is personally nostalgic for portable CD players. “Buying my first Discman was huge,” he said, “like getting an iPod for kids now.”
Other older members of Gen Y expressed similar longing for late ’90s popular culture like AOL buddy lists and compact discs — the once-dominant music medium now in its declining years.

WHILE boomers or Gen Xers might have no idea what the phrase “classic Nickelodeon” implies, to anyone in his or her 20s, it means fondly remembered cable tween shows like “All That” and “Clarissa Explains It All” (whose star, Melissa Joan Hart, recently showed off her weight loss on the cover of People magazine)."

please read and cry at the death of your youth!

<lj:music>summer overture (requiem for a dream)</lj:music>

one of those you know you go to NYU when things:

Every guy you meet has a 1/3 chance of being gay. If he is attractive, the odds go up to 1/2. Attractive and well dressed? Forget it, sweetie.

being white and heterosexual is a minority

a welcome week event was specifically for gay jews

instead of seeing a sock on the door, you see a yarmulka

you get the feeling that you made a wrong turn into Chinatown, but realize that you're just standing in front of the entrance to the Stern building.

"Are you heterophobic? Come to the heterophobic club, only at NYU!"

"Parties" contain no more than 20 people and are broken up by 1am at the latest.

Getting signed into the party takes as long as the party itself.

you absolutely despise Greenpeace, no matter how you actually feel about the environment.

a "frat" party is a sure thing you won't have fun.

One of your welcome activities was a fake orgasm contest
Another one was “guess the straight person”

you go to school with matilda, the occasional olsen twin, or that kid from the sixth sense

Half your friends are from Long Island, the other half from New Jersey

Fuck it, you’ll just go to BBQ (RIP 8th Street BBQ)

The football team is undefeated since WWII

½ your graduating class is just in college waiting for their big break

People have studio instead of classes

You walk into Stern without a suit and people give you funny looks

You hate Columbia with a passion, for really no reason at all

80% of the dogs you see while walking to class have better lives than you do

You take class field trips to the MET

Two words: Elevator Rage.

Instead of Frisbees and picnics, your campus lawn has drug dealers and street musicians

You've been chased by a homeless man

you have seen a squirrel stare down a homeless man for their preferred spot on a park bench... and win.

the only way to get a tan is to lie out on the sidewalks of NYC

Tischies and Sternies can be identified at first glance.

your university is the largest private real estate holder in the city

the first thing you do when you here the fire alarm is remember to grab your NYU ID...

There is always construction, but nothing actually seems to change

You say excuse me to pigeons

Tourists have taken pictures of you (you're a "real NYU student"!)

You accidentally wander onto film sets

you get offered several types of drugs just walking to class

Even the bums on the street have iPods

you know that you can only take the elevator to the third floor if you're in a full body cast, otherwise you will be given looks of death from the other 25 kids on the elevator.

the security guards know more about your sex life than your friends do

your University stops traffic on an entire street in NYC so that Steinhardt and Tish students can perform.

"He's not sketchy, he's just straight."

the public safety van takes 30 min to get to you and only sends someone if you are in the lobby of an NYU building

you're only allowed to use your kitchen if your windows are open........ but your windows don't open.

keeping kosher becomes easier than not.

your idea of a good show is a musical about STI's and finding your sexuality.

you pick up a phone in an emergency and your first clear thought is to dial 9999.

you've awoken to a threesome occurring on the bunk overhead

your super original music taste is now only the norm

you know pre-meds who want to kill themselves

you know sternies who go for cocktails at 10am between classes

you know tischies who think that their lives are dramatic/people want to listen to them sing

you don't go home for breaks and your friends at other schools come visit you on theirs

you've learned how to use a metrocard to open your door if you lock yourself out (also known as "Jersey-ing")

when your residence hall is more concerned about proper usage of sex toys than exiting the building during a fire alarm

you can get pizza at 4 am then again at 6 am...and it will still taste really fucking good

the Hari Krishnas interrupt your studying

you can major in porn as a grad student

your orientation diversity activity is deciding what people of which race, gender, sexual orientation, or occupation you'd prefer to kill first

your professor was a former porn artist and finds it appropriate to show the class slides of her work

everyone you know has at least 4 pieces of illegal furniture/stuff or a pet in their room

you get offered free counseling every day because they are so afraid that you'll off yourself

you don't know anyone who likes the olsen twins

you move to brooklyn for affordable housing

you see a security guard drive down washington place in a choad-mobile

no matter what your personal political views are, you find the College Republicans really annoying

you've honestly considered jumping from bobst after getting shot down during your first writing conference from writing the essay

your library's floor is artistically designed to prevent students from killing themselves...

you hear the story about too many suicides and the burning couch thrown out the window and your biggest qualm is still the fact that our terraces and windows no longer open

something even remotely resembling a terrorist attack happens and everyone and their mother calls you to make sure you're still alive

the punishment for selling drugs and throwing stuff out the window is the same
(getting kicked out of housing)

you find yourself saying "smoke smoke" when you walk through a park.

have to get out of a pigeons way while on the side walk

every guy plays guitar and/or 15 other instruments

you can major in making wine through gallatin

youre "the sexiest student on camp-oos" according to sylvia

<strike>you can get hot cookies delivered to your dorm at 2 am</strike>

...Part of your room used to be a bathroom.
(You can tell because the painted over showerhead is STILL attached to the wall...right next to a fuse box)

you commute from jersey and still get to class before the people in dorm halls when you've both left at the same time

you graduate in the park and one of the traditions is to splash in the fountain.

2:30 AM on a school night is the ideal time to get high...even though you haven't finished your work.

you've never been to a kegger, but you've done more drugs than your DARE class ever warned you about.

Instead of going to a football/basketball game, people go to see a Broadway show

you know the homeless guy you pass on the way to class every morning by name

you are late to class because someone was filming a bad movie on broadway and you weren't allowed to walk through the set while they were "rolling."

adam sandler goes to your gym and spike lee teaches your class

film majors refer to Martin Scorsese as "Uncle Marty"

an entire block is closed for a day for the school to give out free strawberries

you are more afraid of being hit by a bike than a car

your RA's "happy holidays" note on your door contains the postscript: "see me if you need some more safer sex supplies

you get thrown out of your room because your roommate has to draw himself naked for a class assignment

you can't focus on writing the essay homework at 3 am because somebody is tap dancing in the hall

You walk out into your hallway and immediately get second-hand high

there is a mouse living in your dorm room radiator, because it actually only heats up to about fifty degrees

you are still meeting your floormates in december

You pay up to $4 to do a load of laundry

half the class is missing because it's a Jewish holiday

Your professor cancels class when it's a Jewish holiday

You live in a university dorm, and still have a ½ hour commute to campus

Your friends who live "off-campus" live much closer to any school buildings than you do, even though you technically live "on campus"

you have to identify yourself every single time you go into your dorm, even if you just walked out of it

you scan your fingerprints to enter you dorm, which seems cool to visiting friends but is actually the reason you got pinkeye

Your dorm elevator only stops on certain floors

Sometimes you're too lazy to order take out because you would have to walk downstairs

Getting shafted in housing means going to the #2 ranked dorm in America

There is nothing quite like a 3 am fire drill

You don't know the meaning of communal bathrooms

Your RA’s idea of “goodies” is plenty of condoms, lube and dental dams

You've waited on so many lines and been subject to so much Kafkaesque bureaucracy that sometimes you wonder if you go to school in Soviet Russia

summer vacation is the worst part of the year.

you know a hug from jsex is equivalent to selling your soul to the devil
